Adding and moving waypoints on a route – How to add waypoints by address or map click and reorder them to refine a route
What this guide does
This guide explains how to add waypoints to a route in the National Network Map (NNM) Route Planner. This guide shows how to add waypoints by address or by clicking on the map, and how to change their order. This guide also explains how distance and time estimates update as waypoints change.
Prerequisites
A web browser with internet access.
Access to the National Network Map and the Routes tab for a supported Class 2 vehicle.
A route already created or in progress (see “Creating a route”).

Step-by-step instructions
1. Open the National Network Map and go to the Routes tab for your chosen Class 2 vehicle.
2. Either open an existing route or continue editing the route you just created.
3. To add a waypoint by address:
a) Click into the next empty waypoint address box.
b) Type the address or place name.
c) Select the correct location from any suggestions so it appears on the map.
4. To add a waypoint directly on the map:
a) Click on the route line or the road where you want the new waypoint.
b) Confirm the point if prompted; a new waypoint is added to the list.
5. After you have at least two waypoints, review the automatically calculated distance and time estimate for the route. These values update whenever waypoints are added or moved.
6. To change the order of waypoints, either:
a) Drag and drop a waypoint up or down in the list, or
b) Use the up and down buttons to the left of the address boxes.
7. Wait for the route, distance and time estimates to update after each change.
Tips and common issues
As every route is built on an underlying network, if a waypoint is placed off network the system may indicate that a permit might be required.
For complex journeys, add major waypoints first, then refine by adding additional points in between.
If distance or time estimates do not appear, ensure there are at least two valid waypoints on the route.
Where to get help
Consult your internal logistics or planning team for typical waypoint patterns on common routes.
Contact the NHVR Route Planner support team if waypoints cannot be added, moved or recognised correctly.
