Creating a route – How to create a new route for a selected Class 2 vehicle on the National Network Map
What this guide does
This guide explains how to create a new route using the National Network Map (NNM) Route Planner. This guide describes the Class 2 vehicle restriction for routing and how to select the vehicle you want to route for. This guide also explains why routing is important for road managers and how it relates to underlying access networks.
Prerequisites
A web browser with internet access.
Access to the National Network Map.
A Class 2 vehicle configuration (excluding PBS vehicles).

Step-by-step instructions
Open NHVR Go and navigate to National Network Map from Maps
Identify the Correct Vehicle Network (via NHVR Go)
Vehicle configuration selection is completed in NHVR Go under Vehicle Networks (separate from the National Network Map view).Go to Vehicle Networks.
Adjust the filters to Class 2 and Non-PBS.
Use these filters to identify which networks fall under Class 2 (Non-PBS).
Once you have identified the correct network, return to the National Network Map (NNM) and select that network.
Using these filters helps determine which networks apply to each vehicle class before selecting the network in NNM.
Select the vehicle configuration (Class 2, non-PBS) for which you want to create a route.
Locate the Routes tab.
In the Routes tab, review the list of any previous routes in the left-hand column (sorted alphabetically, by last viewed or by date created).
At the bottom of the left-hand column, click Create a route.
7. Enter a starting location for the route (for example a depot, town or address) and confirm it on the map.
8. Add at least one further location so the system can calculate the route between them (see the “Adding and moving waypoints on a route” guide for details).
9. Once at least two waypoints are in place, wait for the NNM to calculate and display the route and show the initial distance and time estimates.
Tips and common issues
Every route is built on an underlying access network, so if parts of the network are missing, the route may be incomplete or may indicate a permit is required.
For long or complex routes, create and refine the route step by step, starting with key waypoints.
Where to get help
Check with your organisation’s access or logistics team if you are unsure which Class 2 vehicle configuration to use.
Contact the NHVR Spatial or Route Planner support team if the Routes tab does not appear or routes fail to calculate.
