Adding Level Crossing on Road Segments

Most roads crossing active railways are mapped in OpenStreetMap. However, if a road is not mapped or recently mapped, level crossings may not be included in OSM. This example uses a simulated example along Saville Road

  1. Ensure that the road exists

✅ If the road is present, you can continue to step 2

❌ If there is no road present, you can visit Adding New Roads

  1. The quickest way to resolve this crossing issue is to locate the warning icon in the bottom right corner of the editing interface. Marked in the screenshot below also contains a brief description of the types of warnings present. Note that there may be multiple warnings, select the warning you need to resolve by clicking the required warning within the yellow box.

Note that the warning icon also has the number of warnings present within view

  2. After clicking the specific warning, the map interface will move to the selected warning, and the Edit feature pane will select the road segment that crosses the railway (in this example, Saville Road crossing Brisbane Sydney Railway). Click ‘Connect the features’ to create the level crossing

  3. If there is only one warning present, the Issues panel will appear green. However, note that if there are more than one warning, i.e., more yellow boxes in the Issues panel, you can ignore these additional issues if needed. Save and add a changeset comment such as ‘Added level crossing’ to add the level crossing into OSM.
