How to Split Roads in OSM

Understanding When to Split a Road in OSM

✅ A section of road must have different attributions from the sections beside it to be split in OSM.

❌ Segments that have common attributes, that is, no different tags or relations should not be split.

Why would you need to split a road?

Different attributes such as speed limits and surface type can support correct routing and navigation in OSM and also NHVR Go. Reflecting the correct changes in road conditions are important for up-to-do and reliable information

📘 Instructions

Step 1: Verify the Road Needs Splitting

^The above list is non-exhaustive. More attributions on roads can be found here: Australian Tagging Guidelines/Roads - OpenStreetMap Wiki and other pages on the OpenStreetMap Wiki

Step 2: Identify the Split Location

This example uses changes in surface type as the justification for splitting a road.

Having accurate surface type can indicate to data consumers a change from a solid paved surface to a more unstable dirt surface.
