Using National Network Map filters to find a network

Using National Network Map filters to find a network

What this guide does

This guide explains how to use the filter options in the National Network Map to narrow down visible networks. It helps road managers focus on the networks that match a particular state and vehicle type. It also explains how the filters change as you refine your search.

Prerequisites

A web browser with internet access.

Access to the National Network Map (either directly or via NHVR Go).

A basic understanding of whether you want to filter by state, vehicle type or both.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Open the National Network Map using your preferred method (direct website or via NHVR Go → Access management → National Network Map).

3. Locate the filter controls in the map interface

4. Apply the first-level filter by selecting the relevant state or jurisdiction. This is the base filter for narrowing down networks.

5. Refine your search by selecting additional filters as they become available, such as vehicle type or other attributes. The set of filters will expand as you define your search more specifically.

6. Review the map and left-hand panel. Only networks that meet your chosen filter parameters will be displayed.

7. Adjust the filter values if you need to broaden or narrow the results (for example, change state, vehicle type or other available options).

Tips and common issues

Filters are dynamic: expect new filter options to appear as you define your search (for example, after choosing a state, vehicle-type filters may appear).

If no networks appear after applying filters, your combination of state and vehicle-type filters may be too specific – broaden the filters and try again.

Remember that filters work in addition to the search function; use them together to locate networks more efficiently.

If you are unsure which filters to use, start with state only, then gradually add more filters until the displayed networks match your needs.

Where to get help

Ask colleagues or your organization’s GIS / mapping support for guidance on typical filter combinations used for your area.

Contact the NHVR Spatial or Network Management support team if filters do not behave as expected or no networks appear.

Use the Feedback or Help options in the National Network Map to report issues with filters.
