Finding a network on the National Network Map
What this guide does
This guide explains how to open the National Network Map (NNM) and find a heavy vehicle access network by vehicle type or by jurisdiction. It helps road managers quickly locate the correct network view before checking routes or conditions. It also explains where to see key network information once a network is selected.
Differences ways to access Networks
It is possible to search in several different ways to find networks.
Networks
Vehicle Categories
Access Instruments
Networks
Search by state network provides a network-based breakdown mirroring the current network structure on state and territory websites, and targets users familiar with the existing structures to reduce the change impacts moving to the National Network Map.
This view will only provide state based networks. To view national network maps use the Vehicle Category or Access Instrument views.
Vehicle Category (recommended)
Search by vehicle category provides a vehicle centred approach to find networks and targets new users who are not familiar with access instruments. Vehicles are grouped according to configuration and sub-configuration.
Network view will not provide full lists of eligible vehicles, requiring operators to look up operator guides or the legal instrument itself.
Selecting from vehicle types and seeing all nationally where the vehicle can access, will provide better visibility, and improve fleet management decision making.
There are over 1,000 different vehicle configurations included, with each associated with its applicable maps. This gives operators a level of detail that has never been available before in the jurisdictional websites.
Access Instrument
Group by access instrument provides a list of the national and state notices, pre-approval networks and permit schemes, and targets more experienced users who know which instrument they run under.
Prerequisites
A web browser with internet access.
Access to the National Network Map (either directly or via NHVR Go).

Step-by-step instructions
1. Open your web browser.
2. Go to the National Network Map website (maps.nhvr.gov.au) or log in to NHVR Go and open Access management then National Network Map.
3. If you see the terms and conditions screen (first-time use), read the information and select the option to accept the terms so you can enter the map.
4. Confirm the View by setting at the top of the map is set to Vehicles and Routing. This is the default view and is designed to help you work by vehicle type.
5. Under the Vehicles and Routing view, select the appropriate vehicle category and sub-category for the configuration you are interested in.
6. Review the descriptors shown with the selected network (for example, whether it is limited to a particular state or is HML). If no descriptors are shown, the network is a national network.
7. Wait for the map to update. All networks that apply to the chosen vehicle, across all relevant states, will be displayed on the map.
8. To instead find a network by jurisdiction, change the View by setting to Networks.
9. In Networks view, choose the jurisdiction you are interested in, then select the radio button for the network you want to see. The map will zoom to that jurisdiction and show that network.
10. Review the left-hand panel for key information about the selected network, including which states have corresponding networks, links to subscribe to updates, and access instrument details (via the Access tab).
Tips and common issues
If you only know the vehicle type (not the network name), start in Vehicles and Routing view and select the vehicle category and sub-category.
If you only want to see networks for one state, switch to Networks view and select the jurisdiction first.
Remember that networks shown without descriptors are national networks, which may apply across multiple jurisdictions.
Use the left-hand panel to confirm you are looking at the correct network before relying on it for access decisions.
Where to get help
Check your organisation’s internal process or GIS support for help selecting the correct network.
Contact the NHVR Spatial or Network Management support team if you cannot locate a network you expect to see.
Use the Feedback or Help options in the National Network Map if available in your environment.
