Applying for PBS Design Approval modifications using 'full smart form'

Updated over a year ago

For a guide to Design Approval modifications click here.

When creating a Variation application for Design Approvals submitted using 'full smart form' there are two options:

  1. Create the Variation application by clicking on the 'Apply for design approval' button in the PBS applications table.

  2. Create the Variation application by opening the original Design Approval application or any other variant and from the 'Manage variants' dropdown below the application header click 'Create new layout variant'.

Option 1) Create the Variation application by clicking on the 'Apply for design approval' button

  1. From the PBS applications table click on the 'Apply for design approval' button.

  2. Select the Variation option, enter the variation type, and enter the Design Approval number.

  3. When a Variation is created the Portal will create a new variant by copying from the last full-feature application Configuration, Vehicle specifications, Design exemptions and Assessment.

  4. Make the required modifications based on the selected variation type

Option 1 will always use the original application as the basis for creating the new variant. To create a Variation based on a different variant use option 2.

If the original application was not submitted using 'full smart form' then the Portal will not have any data to copy from and the variant when created will be blank and will need to be fully specified including: Application details, Configuration, Vehicle specifications, Design exemptions and Assessment.

Option 2) Create the Variation application by opening the original Design Approval application or any other variant

  1. Find and open a variant from the PBS applications table.

  2. If the variant was submitted using 'full smart form' the 'Manage variants' menu will be available beneath the user details.

  3. Click on the 'Manage variants' menu and then click on 'Create new layout variant'

  4. A new variant will be created by copying from the current variant Configuration, Vehicle specifications, Design exemptions and Assessment.

  5. Make the required modifications based on the selected variation type.

Submitting a Variation application

Adding new variant

If the variation type is 'Adding new variant' the application is treated as standalone and not relative to the original variant. If the application was created based on copying from the original or other variant then:

  1. Removing any vehicle specifications not relevant to this variant (e.g. engine should be specific to this variant, tyres should be specific to this variant, suspension should be specific to this variant)

  2. Attachments should be specific to this variant (e.g. dimensions drawings and bridge drawings should be specific to this variant only)

Other variation types

For other variation types the application is again treated as a standalone new variant and the required updates will be made against the new variant and submitted.

Submit the application

The submitted application will have Part A and Part B documents generated automatically for this variant only and will not reference the original variant.

Once assessed a stand-alone 'mini-DA' will be issued consisting of a Part A and Part B document specific to the variant only.
