OpenStreetMap (OSM)

See below, OpenStreetMap looks familiar. If you've used mapping systems before to find an address or a football oval, or the nearest café you'll notice there are roads, cities, buildings, rivers etc. It's very familiar and OSM provides the same functionality and features as other maps.

But there are some things that make OSM special and very useful when building a map to display Heavy Vehicle networks upon.

If you want to add, delete or change features on a map then register to become an OSM Contributor - this is a community volunteer mapper; someone who knows their own area very well indeed and is keen to contribute by building great maps.

OpenStreetMap Fast Facts

The NHVR is building their new Way2Go! application and Route Planner upon OSM so having a rich and quality data set is critical. Community contributors ensure that this happens, however the more the merrier...so far there are nearly 9 million contributors globally. Want to become a contributor then keep reading.

OpenStreetMap YouTube Videos

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Channel on YouTube provides some two minute tutorials which are informative and useful:

What is OpenStreetMap?

Signing Up for OpenStreetMap

Adding a Building to OSM

Adding a Road in OSM

Validating in OSM

Would you like to sign up to become a contributor to OpenStreetMap and learn how to add roads, buildings and build your mapping community then go to the Learn How to Use OpenStreetMap (OSM) article.

There are plenty of other YouTube OSM videos that are really helpful. Good luck mapping!
