Roundabouts

This guide will focus on a simulated scenario where we need to add a roundabout on Equestrian Drive and Kelso Close, near Ipswich

📘 Instructions

  1. We want to add a roundabout that was previous a T-intersection. What happens if you can’t split the road, there may be a relation attached to the road, click the link on how to accommodate this [Link to relations].

  2. Right click on the grey node that forms the T-intersection and select disconnect (or shortcut key: d)

  3. Disconnect the nodes to make way for the roundabout you will add in shortly

  4. Roughly trace the outline of the roundabout - you can then use the circularise tool by right-clicking the roundabout and selecting the top option, circularise

  5. Re-connect the road segments onto the roundabout [ensure that the intersecting road segments don’t share a common node, example below…]

  6. You now need to add three important tags onto the roundabout you have added, the tags section can be found in the Edit Feature pane on the right-hand side of the screen when the roundabout is selected:

    • roundabout=junction

    • oneway=yes

    • highway=[You will need to find the highway classification that corresponds with highest classification of the road you’re working with. In this example, it is tertiary as Equestrian Drive is classified as a tertiary road (in yellow). More assistance can be found here: Australian Tagging Guidelines/Roads - OpenStreetMap Wiki]

  1. Ensure the roundabout has the correct one-way direction. One way to edit this is through the One Way section in the Feature Type pane when the roundabout is selected. Click change direction to correct this if necessary
